Your Education
Committee has a lot of goodies on its plate,
and all you have to do is show up to take advantage of them. You are probably aware of
Genealogy Bytes,
our special interest group that focuses on using your computer in your
genealogy research. It
was a spin-off
from a Discussion Group session several years ago.
Genie Bytes meets from 2:00 – 4:00 on
the
first Thursday of every month at Milton Public Library on Union Street
in Milton.
There’s lots of free parking.
Similarly, our new
Writers Group special interest group is a
spin-off from the last two Discussion Group sessions.
Our first meeting will be at noon on
Tuesday
January 24th at the Georgia House in Millsboro. At that time, we will
decide on a more
permanent meeting place, depending on the number of people who attend. The goal of this group is
to help you turn
those family group sheets and census reports into a prose form that
people will
really want to read.
Speaking
of Discussion Group, our 2012 Spring Discussion Series will
focus on researching tips
and techniques. Discussion
Group meets
from 2:00 – 4:00 on six Tuesdays in the upstairs meeting room at the
Rehoboth
Beach Public Library on Rehoboth Avenue
in Rehoboth. The
dates and topics are:
April 10 – Basic
Research Skills
April 17 – Using
Folders on the Computer (to organize your information)
April 24 – Research
Problems and Piles (we all have piles of paper to deal with)
May 01 –
Forms
May 08 –
Terminology
May 15 –
Questions & Answers
You
are welcome to attend any or all of the Discussion Group
sessions.
Sussex
County Cousins exists under the Education Committee
umbrella and is a joint program of the SCGS and the Laurel Public
Library. It is
periodically held at Laurel Public
Library. Even if
you don’t think you
have any Sussex County Cousins, you should come – you may be surprised! Keep an eye on The Searcher or the SCGS web site
(www.scgsdelaware.org) for the
next Sussex County Cousins.
The Education
Committee occasionally organizes field trips
to various research repositories and conferences.
No trips are currently on the radar
screen
because of possible inclement weather.
If you have a trip you’d like to see
scheduled for the spring, let
Marilyn McMahon know.
So, as you can see,
your Education Committee has lots of
offerings for the benefit of our membership and guests.
Come to some of the programs we have
scheduled and see if you don’t come away more excited about how the
things
you’ve learned can help with your genealogical research.
